Traffic School Options for a Traffic Citation

When you get a one-point traffic citation, if you haven’t gotten one in at least 18 months, you have two choices. You can pay the fine and understand that there will be a 1-point citation on your driving record. Or the other option is to attend traffic school, which does not get you out of paying the fine, but it does remove the 1-point citation from your driving record.

Depending on the job you have getting that one point removed could be very important. If you opt to attend traffic school, what are your traffic school options for a traffic citation?

There are tons of traffic school options out there, however your options basically boil down to two, traditional or online.

Traditional Traffic School

Traditional traffic school is exactly what it sounds like, traffic school in a traditional setting. You would sign up for the course, choosing a day and time to attend. You would choose a location, hopefully close to home. And if given the option you would choose your instructor. You would be required to attend the class, probably weekly, at the same time and day until the course was completed. Each week the instructor will go through the coursework, assign you the necessary homework and send you on your way.

If you are lucky, you will get an instructor who is engaging and willing to answer questions. If you are not so lucky, you will be bored out of your mind every week and if you have any questions they will go unanswered.

This option is great for anyone who does better with a structured environment. The course is set up to cover particular material every week. And you will be responsible for completing the necessary homework for the next class.

Online Traffic School

Online traffic school offers courses that are available to you anytime. Once you’ve chosen an online school, and have paid the fees, you will be given immediate access to the course. You will be able to complete the course when it is convenient for you and move through the course at your own speed. That means you can work on the class at 2 AM or 2 PM. You can work for 10 minutes or three hours.

When selecting an online traffic school course you will want to choose one that has engaging and interactive materials. You will also want to be sure it tests your knowledge as you go through the course to be sure your understanding the material.

This option is great for anyone who does better in a self-motivated environment. The course is broken up into sections, but you can cover as little or as much as you want each time you sit down to work through the course. If you have questions a reputable online course will have 24 hour customer service available to answer any questions.

When choosing a traffic school be sure it has been approved by the courthouse of the district/county where you got the ticket, which may not necessarily be your home county. Also be sure you get a completion certificate once you have successfully pass the final exam. That must be turned in as proof that you successfully completed the course. Without the certificate they will not remove the 1-point citation.
